14 Nov, 2001:  Sonique to quit DJ career

The UK's biggest name female DJ Sonique has announced she is quitting the world of DJing after years at the top of her field.

"I don't think there is much to DJ for any more" the Brit Award winner explained. "I feel there is something missing in clubland at the moment" she told the London Evening Standard. "There is not the sparkle clubs used to have and the momentum has gone. That was kind of the sentiment of my last single. I seriously want to quit club DJing altogether - and certainly I will be cutting back" Sonique concluded. She will instead concentrate on producing her own material. "I feel there is something missing in clubland at the moment. I want to get more into making records for a new generation of DJs."

Considering Sonique can apparently charge up to a stonking £ 70,000 an hour to spin tunes in clubs around the world, deciding not to bother is a pretty brave move.

She added that she intended to focus more on the US and Europe.

Paul Oakenfold, Britain's biggest DJ, hit back at Sonique's claim of a decline in clubbing. "London and the UK are still the world centre of the dance music scene. I love being here" he said.

Western pop star Sonique provides soundtrack for anti-clerical demonstrations in Teheran?

On 27 Oct, 2001, Nick Pelham reports for British newspaper The Independent that Iran's capital Teheran was gripped by worst rioting since revolution:
«Tens of thousands of young people have taken to the streets of Iran in the past week, causing some of the worst violence in the history of the 22-year-old Islamic revolution.
The youths - both boys and girls - used two World Cup football qualifying fixtures as an excuse to reclaim the streets and assert their hunger for Western culture and freedoms.
In Tehran, the young people braved tear gas and blows from the security forces to cavort to the sound of the Western pop star Sonique, blaring from radios. Girls blew hooters at Islamic vigilantes armed with staves while their boyfriends fought riot police with stones and homemade explosives.
Shock at a 3-1 loss against Bahrain on Sunday sparked two nights of nationwide protests and the crowds returned to the streets on Wednesday following a 1-0 victory against the Emirates.
"What we're witnessing are the sort of demonstrations which preceded the last months of the Shah," said a senior Iranian analyst who wanted his name withheld.
Dozens of banks have been burned and cars overturned as the authorities set up special courts to try more than a thousand detainees officially denounced as football hooligans.
But the chanting of the crowds has been overtly political. Youths taunted groups of brutal Islamic vigilantes known as Bassiji, Persian for holy warriors, and chanted zindibad azadi [long live freedom].
The 11 September attacks have boosted pro-Western voices. Iran has emerged as one of the few Muslim states where people have taken to the streets in sympathy with the US ... »

Summer 2001:   Sonique told WorldPop she's already started work on a follow-up to her successful «Hear My Cry» album, released this year. "I've started working on demos and it sounds good at the moment. If I could, I'd love to work with Kid Rock. I love his stuff. It's very leftfield, not what you'd expect and that's the area I like to work in "               (according to WorldPop December 12, 2000)
"I'm in the studio working on a really good track. Basically, working on the next album. I work quite quickly so hopefully around Christmas, or New Year, the new album should be out."
